In the today’s world almost every person is having a computer and they are working quite well with their PCs, but it’s unfortunate that more than half of the total computer users are unaware of the computer’s internal problems and functionality, so when their computer got some even minor problem they rush to the computer repairing shop and spend money for it maintenance.
Below are some useful guidelines which if one know he can take care of his computer in a good manner.
1. Manage your PC’s critical Processes
Mostly when a person faces some problem in running programs on his computer, he goes to the Windows Task Manager. But it would be interesting to know that there is a free tool in your Window which is far better than the task manager and tells the process/Program’s status very clearly and this is the Sysinternals Process Explorer (Microsoft acquired Sysinternals last year).
Dealing with the information from the power explorer is not very difficult task but below are some tips to get started:
- Handles (a term that refers to programming methodology) are a convenient way to measure a process’s resource utilization. Processes with high handle usage should be the first ones you kill when resources run low.
- Instead of killing the process you must better suspend it.
- Viewing program’s process identification is to better tell whether it’s friend or foe? Open the program, and then switch to Process Explorer. In the top-right corner is a target icon (concentric circles). Click this icon and drag it onto the program you want to ID; Process Explorer will highlight the process.
2. Add Windows- Power toys in your collections:
“Power toys” an unofficial set of utilities is offered by Microsoft Windows. Some of the useful Power Toys are described below.
- Image Resizer: A kind of menu which enable you to resize any photo without even entering into the editor. Just right-click the photo and click on the resize option.
- Tweak UI: This is the essential tool which enables you to have a hand on your computer’s privacy and operations.
- Sync toy: Improves the tasks of synchronizing files which have been used on different machines.
3. Root out the PC problems using Event ID’s:
Event Viewer is the tool which tells you the problems of your PC here are some short cut tips for getting information faster than before.
- Start by familiarizing yourself with Event Viewer before you have a problem. It’s under Start, Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer.
- The event will be defined with all the necessary information they can hold. Like date, type, creation date etc.
- In the Event Properties window, you’ll find detailed information about the error in question and a link to the Microsoft support Web site. Clicking the link will open a detail page within the Windows Help application for the error you’re investigating.
4. Solve your Wireless Connection Problems:
Wi-Fi although gives you many benefits of it yet when having any problem, it becomes quite frustrating. Mostly it creates Problems in the areas having low signal problem. Some of the tips to sort out these problems are:
- Disconnect your wireless connection and then reconnect it after about some seconds by reconnecting it by right clicking on it and then clicking the repair icon.
- If the problem persists unplug your router and then plug it again after about 10 seconds.
- If you’re still encountering problem download and run the evaluation version of Wireless Mon; if your router is on a crowded channel, switch to a less busy one. (Visit your router’s management system to do this; read “Safeguard Your Wi-Fi Network” for directions.) You may see better performance and fewer dropouts.
5. Disaster Recovery Disc:
It’s great to have your PC’s system-restore disks and a fresh copy of Windows at hand, but if your computer does go south, don’t be in such a rush to wipe out the hard drive. In advance, create a DVD full of essential utilities that you can use to try to repair your PC before reinstalling Windows from scratch.
The disaster disc should have updated hardware drivers, notably the network devices. Organize everything in a folder and keep the names simple for the easement of future searches. Here is a list of utilities that are very helpful in disaster management. All are available as trial ware.
- MemTest86: This venerable RAM tester still works.
- Active@ KillDisk: Securely wipes drives as required.
- Hot CPU Tester: Diagnoses CPU problems with an in-depth testing procedure.
- Restoration: Recovers accidentally deleted files from both FAT and NTFS partitions, as well as memory cards.
- HDDlife: Monitors the hard drive to warn you if a failure is near. (It’s also a good idea to install this on your PC for occasional checkups.)
- AOL Active Virus Shield: Free antivirus protection, with an engine powered by Kaspersky.
- Spybot Search & Destroy: Keep an antispyware scanner on hand at all times.
- OpenOffice.Org: Always great for reading Office files when Microsoft Office isn’t working.
Restore your system on any of them and get future help in fighting with disaster.
