Who is the biggest and strongest player in the world of Compact Digital Video Camera? Yeah no doubt Sanyo has been ruling and also crushing competitors for many years. After its Canon TX I, Sony brings its HDR-TGI that is better known in Europe as the HDR-TG3
HDR-TGI, is considered a direct competitor to the Sanyo’s Xacti HD1000, a device that is fully capable of HD but it is very high-priced device as well.
It has almost the same appearance the Canon TXI; Sony’s TGI has somewhat sharp edges with a cute rectangular design. It weighs around only 300g with its battery but still there is a strange sort of heaviness that can be easily realized by the user. The TGI is a nice combination of durability and style that has been housed in a gentle, high-quality plastic or brushed aluminum. You can easily slip it into your front trousers pocket as it has a compact body. Now be ready to capture anything at any time. Its “Stand-by mode” and “Quick-on” allow you to take HD video within the twinkling of an eye and save forever.
Design is somewhat excellent but user interface is poor and quite puzzling the especially the position of some buttons is so awkward that sometimes you can’t record video correctly.
It has a large bright touch screen control panel but all its menus are a real painful experience to use. All I can say, a good appearance with poor interface even sometimes it becomes quite difficult to access some functions.
It gives you an astonishing experience once you start recording video especially when pictures are shown on the little LCD. Pictures are no doubt beautiful but not of a standard that is expected from a 1080 camera.
But there is a good thing a real good thing that many competitors even Sanyo fails to overcome, the TGI‘s image stabilization (I S) is astonishingly stunning and accurate
TGI’s overall video capacity is quite good. We had to struggle with UI to save and edit video on computer. Just like Panasonic SD cameras, AVCHD codec is used by the TGI which is a based on the H.264 and a better codec.
We just can’t understand why Sony has made simple things like installing new Software a real painful and perplexing issue.
Sony has been introducing decent digital cameras and video cameras but it in this case it has not mastered to provide both in one product. Video is no doubt great (If you are not too hard to please) but Photo mode is not up to mark sorry to say it is somewhat horrible. It is better to shot a video and then get a screen capture if you really want to take pictures with that TGI.
It may attract a lot of potential buyer but for me it’s not a mature device that has contemptible companion software, many UI flaws and somewhat poor photo quality. Sanyo’s HD1000 is a better option that offers as good quality video as the TGI and in half of its price.
