Reuters –To discuss government security concerns over “e-mail sent on the Blackberry can’t be monitored or interrupted”; Research in Motion met Indian officials on Thursday.
The Indian government, showing concern over attacks by the militants, perceives RIM’s BlackBerry as a security threat and requires Research In Motion to install servers to be monitored the e-mail traffic.
In a recent letter to Indian customers, Research in Motion announced that it had no intention to disclose confidential talks with some government. According to RIM, it doesn’t have a ‘Master key’ to decode messages and there is no ‘Back door’ entry in its security system.
According to some sources that were familiar with the issue told that there were talks between RIM and the Indian government officials on Thursday and some members of the Canadian High Commission in New Delhi were also present in the meeting at telecoms ministry headquarters.
Indian media reported that the Canadian officials were attending the meetings to help to resolve the issue.
However, the Canadian foreign ministry refused to comment on the talks and just hoped that RIM and the Indian officials could find a “mutually beneficial” solution.
Andimuthu Raja, Indian Telecoms Minister told during the last week that the Canadian firm confirmed the Indian government that it would put forward a suitable solution in two months.
“The BlackBerry security structure has been decisively designed to act as a global system free of any geographical limitation” RIM stated in a letter.
It further adds that the setting of data centers and user’s option of wireless network are not relevant issues from a security point of view as end-to-end coding is used.
RIM is a Waterloo, Ontario-based company that almost 114,000 BlackBerry subscribers in the rapidly growing Indian Cell phone market.
