HP is releasing its second firmware update for MediaSmart Server Series. The latest two of the series; ex487 (1.5TB) and ex485 (750GB) were released last year and gained much praise from all walks of life. Though this is going to be the second firmware update of this year for the series; it will be the first update for these two servers. This is going to be one big update, adding a lot more features than before.

MediaSmart Firmware Update

Important to note is that this update is meant only for ex487 (1.5TB) and ex485 (750GB), as the previous models “simply lacked the horsepower and storage capabilities to handle these new tasks”, according to HP. It is going to be out for FREE downloading for everyone by the end of April.

A handful of features await the MediaSmart users with this update. The Automatic Video Conversion will convert almost any non protected file for viewing on a portable media player, like AVI (DivX, XviD, and MJPEG), MOV, DVR-MS, MPEG-2, MP4, MPEG-4, WMV and unprotected DVD VOB. Conversion will go on in the background with lowest priority. There isn’t a confirmed word about the resulting file’s resolution.

The iStream function will be used for streaming iPhone or iPhone 3G, and will require a free iPhone application. Users will be able to stream media with Wi-Fi, 3G, and even EDGE.

Another addition will be small improvements to the server itself, like enhanced streaming, a stronger Media Collector, superior Apple Time Machine arrangement and the capacity to generate public and private albums in Photo Viewer. Let us all wait when the update arrives.
