Nokia owned more than half of the market for smartphone sales for this period last year, but today the company finds itself looking at a life-size slump and dolefully wondering why. It needs look no further than the iPhone to find the answer.

Nokia still leads the smartphone industry with its 38.9 percent of global share in the recent quarter, but Apple’s iPhone has taken something out of that huge lead and stands at 17.3 percent.

Just a year back, Apple’s iPhone had mere 3.6% of the market, but after the introduction of the more appealing 3G model in the summer, it’s quite clear where the sales have come from.

One analyst says: “We were expecting that Apple would be among the smartphone leaders this quarter with its huge initial new product shipment, but it was just a question how far it would go.

RIM’s BlackBerry range of phones is also looking impressive with its year-on-year quarterly rise from 10.6 percent to 15.2 percent. Similarly, Microsoft and its Windows Mobile platform is firmly among the runners.
