Intel has revealed blueprints for its Larrabee chip that will first appear as finished products by the end of 2009 or in the beginning of 2010.
Unlike the onboard chips that Intel produces for some PC makers, Larrabee will be an independently operating graphics processor.
With this move Intel will be in direct competition with graphics makers like the ATI division of AMD as well as Nvidia.
Intel is considering placing Larrabee into graphics cards for PCs that help to provide high quality images in games and videos.
It is expected that Larrabee will have several separate processing cores onboard just like existing graphics chips from ATI and Nvidia.
So far there are no words about the number of processing cores onboard for Larrabee at launch or in the coming generations. It is being expected that the Nvidia and ATI graphics chips in future will be of hundreds of cores.
Coupled graphics cards are used by many scientists and researchers as a desktop supercomputer that makes the execution of simulations faster and cheaper than on larger machine.
