Wine is Good for Heart If Limited to a Single Drink
For a good many years now it has been found that the red wine helps keep arteries clean. Red wine made from the skins of red grapes is known to benefit the heart and blood vessels to some extent. There are many studies to support the specific beneficial effects of the red wine.A recent study done by the researchers at the ‘Peter Munk Cardiac Centre’ of the ‘Toronto General Hospital’ found that the positive effects of the wine disappeared with the intake of two drinks.
As a part of the protective drive initiated by the researchers in the previous studies, the recent study also advocates the moderate or light consumption of wine and other alcoholic drinks. The researchers tried to determine the differences between the effects of wine and the alcohol on the blood pressure, arteries and the heart. Thirteen volunteers participated in this real time study.
For many years now, doctors couldn’t figure out why in spite of surviving on high fat food, French weren’t dying as frequently from heart attacks. The Red Wine turned out to be a significant factor which is commonly referred as ‘The French Paradox’. The red wine, rich in ‘polyphenols’, helps in altering the levels of blood lipid. It also helps in lowering the cholesterol count, thus keeping the arteries clean. So there are specific benefits associated with the wine.
However in a recent study, the researchers found that the effects of the red wine were not specific to it only. The alcohol also showed the identical effects. The effects might differ with the quantity of the intake however the effects were generally similar. After two drinks, the results showed same effect on heart rate, amount to blood pumped out and the nervous system. There was decrease in the ability of the blood vessels to expand in order to regulate the blood flow.
The study was conducted in the laboratory of Dr. Floras, already carrying a legendary figure in the field of cardio vascular diseases is one of the few in the world equipped to carry out this kind of study involving large number of factors like blood pressure, heart rate, sympathetic nerve firing and arterial diameter.
During the study they found that a single drink of either red wine or alcohol brings no significant changes in the heart, blood and the nervous system. So there is no interference in the heart rate and there is smooth flow of blood due to normal expansion of vessels. There is normal relaxation or dilation in the blood vessels.
However there was found total opposite effects after the two drinks, there is increase in the heart rate, differences were found in the amount of blood pumped out and the sympathetic nerve activity. This could further lead to high blood pressure, cardiac attack leading to sudden death.
This study advocates the consumption of wine and alcohol in moderate amounts and also suggests adopting physical activity and healthy diet to reduce the risks associated with heart.
