flu-shots.gifA new study finds that getting annual flu shots can decrease the risk for disease, hospital visits and school interruptions in college students.

In this study, the researchers studied student of Minnesota University and VA Medical Center campuses during 2002-06 flu seasons.

The background information in 12,975 students study, the researchers found that every year 9% to 20% students got the infection. Among them 30.2% had got a flu shot. The researchers found that the students who had got flu shot had a considerably lower risk of getting illness than those who didn’t get flu shot.

“Vaccination proved quite effective in reducing other flu-related problems like health-care visits, use of antibiotic, poor performance in school and other school interruptions like missing class, missing work or day spent on the bed during the flu season ,” Dr. Kristin L. Nichol’ who led the study, says.

Flu shotsPeople who receive their annual flu shot have lower risk of developing a blood clot, a new study says.

The research says that people under the age of 52 seem to reap more benefit of their annual flu shot. The study has been presented at the American Heart Association’s annual scientific sessions.

These findings are the first to show such an effect and they may help to find why the flu shot decreases the risk of cardiovascular events in people with coronary artery disease.

“These findings are quite helpful for me with patients in the clinic, especially those who had a blood clot,” said Dr. Ann Bolger during a news conference on Sunday.

Evidence suggests that useful bacterium found in health drinks and yoghurt are ineffective on eczema symptoms and can also cause gut problems occasionally.

The researchers reviewed 12 studies that comprised around 800 children who had eczema. In researchers found that in these children probiotics didn’t prove effective to ease itching and the rash.

In some separate studies, some side effects like infection and bowel damage were also reported in 46 patients. According to the experts, further trials are needed to know about the long-term safety of their use. Read the rest of this entry
