According to researchers, some common antidepressants can decrease the fertility of some men, as they cause damage in the DNA of their sperm.

In this small study, the researchers gave paraoxetine( Paxil or Seroxat) to 35 healthy men and they found that the ratio of fragmented DNA sperm cells rose from 13.8 percent to 30.3 percent after four weeks of treatment on average basis.

Almost the same levels of DNA damage are associated to problems with embryo capability in those couples who try to have children.

The research has been reported in the New Scientist magazine and it is expected to be presented in November at a meeting of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.

Some experts conclude that only a substantial proportion of men on paroxtine may have to face fertility related damage, as it adversely affects the DNA integrity of sperm.

More than 12000 couples with reproductive health related problems have been studied by the Researchers in France. The researchers found that among most of these couples pregnancy rates dropped and miscarriage rates surprisingly increased when the man’s age was over 35. And they concluded from that to reach successful pregnancy, the father’s age was as important as of the mother.

The study has been presented at the 24th annual conference of the European Society of human Reproduction and Embryology in Barcelona, Spain by the lead researcher Dr. Stephanie Belloc.

Belloc told in a press conference that it was the first research that showed such a strong effect on reproductive success rates from the father’s side.

There are certain common beliefs which try to distinguish between the motivating factors determining the attraction quotient in a man and a woman. The two common factors among them are attractive looks and earning power. The tradition belief says that women are primarily attracted with earning power of a man and a man is motivated by good looks of a woman. These two factors still hold well in the modern society too.A recent study compiled by two Northwestern University psychologists however suggests that the gender differentiation however doesn’t play a very prominent role in getting motivated by the two factors of attraction and earning power. In reality both men and women are equally inspired by either the good looks or the earning potential of his or her partner.

The study “Sex Differences in Mate Preferences Revisited: Do People Know What They Initially Desire in a Romantic Partner?” was conducted by Paul Eastwick, a graduate student in psychology in the ‘Weinberg School of Arts and Sciences’ and Eli Finkel, assistant professor of psychology at Northwestern.
