Tobacco Tax

Japan has been long considered as a smoker’s paradise but now Japanese government has been planning to take some very significant steps to remove this tag from their country.

And this Tuesday in a meeting the Japanese officials said that they are planning to raise the tax on tobacco and the implementation will start in the next year. The cabinet in that meeting approved the proposal that aims to hike the duty by 3.5 yen a cigarette.

This new proposal seems to fulfill the government’s plans to reduce smoking as the price of each cigarette will rise to quite a high amount. The move is expected to raise the price of each cigarette of about 5 yen and of that 1.5 yen would go to the makers and retailers. This rise will put Japan into the list of those developed countries which are putting high prices for the cigarettes.

SmokersThe results of a new study show that changes in the design of cigarette with the passage of time can raise the risk for certain types of lung cancer particularly in the US smokers.

Dr. David Burns, the lead author of the study, says in a tobacco research meeting that nearly 51% cases of lung cancer are because of these changes.

It’s not happening for the first time that researchers have presented such results as many other previous studies have shown similar sort of results regarding different types of cigarettes that also include low-tar cigarettes. The interesting finding was that US as well as Australia both have switched to well-known milder cigarettes, but the risk of adenocarcinoma, a lung tumor was found higher in the US smokers than the Australian.
