With the help of scanning technology, Swedish researchers found a difference in the nerve-wiring of gay men and women’s brain if compared to the heterosexual people’s brains of the same sex. However, a similarity was also noted between homosexual people’s brain and their opposite sex heterosexual people’s brain. Thus, the brain of a gay man was more likely to the brain of heterosexual woman than a heterosexual man and similarly, a lesbian’s brain was more alike to heterosexual man’s brain than a heterosexual woman.
The study has been published online in the Journal of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) and it was the work of Drs Ivanka Savic and Per Lindström from the Stockholm Brain Institute at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Karolinska Institute.
Scientists have already confirmed that the brains of heterosexual and gay people of the similar sex show different response to objects of sexual attraction and odor. But the moot question is that the differences take place due to intrinsic brain differences or because of the way which is learnt by gay and heterosexual people to identify these objects of sexual attraction.
90 adult volunteers were registered under the study and among them 25 were heterosexual men, 25 were heterosexual women and 20 were homosexual men and 20 lesbian women. By using magnetic resonance technology, the researchers scanned all 90 to assess overall and hemispherical brain volume. PET scan to assess the blood flow in the brain was also carried out in 50 among these people that could be analyzed to notice the links between amygdalae in two parts of the brain.
The amygdalae are found in the form of clusters of neurons that take part in many brain functions like processing and storage of memories, emotional expression and smell interpretation. The researchers concluded that the brains of homosexual people showed “sex-atypical cerebral irregularity and functional links.”
