More than 12000 couples with reproductive health related problems have been studied by the Researchers in France. The researchers found that among most of these couples pregnancy rates dropped and miscarriage rates surprisingly increased when the man’s age was over 35. And they concluded from that to reach successful pregnancy, the father’s age was as important as of the mother.
The study has been presented at the 24th annual conference of the European Society of human Reproduction and Embryology in Barcelona, Spain by the lead researcher Dr. Stephanie Belloc.
Belloc told in a press conference that it was the first research that showed such a strong effect on reproductive success rates from the father’s side.
12,236 couples who went through 21,239 IUIs or intrauterine inseminations from January 2002 to December 2006 at the Fylan Center, France, were studied by Belloc and her team. In all these cases male partner’s sperm were used instead of donated sperm and most of these couples were getting treatment due to man’s infertility.
To take away the seminal fluid from the sperm, it is spun in a centrifuge in this IUI procedure and after this process the sperm is directly put into the uterus at the time of woman’s ovulating. This technique is used when there is no problem with women fertility and it is also considered less pervasive than IVF.
The prostaglandin, which is found in the seminal fluid can become the reason of contractions in the uterus and can expel the semen if the sperm is not processed in the centrifuge to take away the seminal fluid.
The researchers examined a number of characteristics like number of sperms, shape, agility and miscarriage and the clinical pregnancy rates for every IUI and afterward analyzed the results.
According to these results there is a close link between maternal age and decreased pregnancy rates.
