The final rule excluding certain cattle materials from all animal feed even in pet food has been issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This final rule also guards animals and users against mad cow disease (Bovine spongiform encephalopathy)
“This FDA action serves to further protect the U.S. cattle population from the already low risk of BSE,” stated Dr. Bernadette Dunham, Director of FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine. “The new rule strengthens existing safeguards.’’
In these materials, which can not be used in animal feed any more includes those tissues that have mounting risk of shifting the factor that is considered causing BSE. Brains and spinal cords of 30 months and older cattle are some of the major sources of these high risk cattle materials. There is a low risk of BSE among the cattle less than 30 months of age and the risk gradually increases among the cattle that are more than 30 months of age. It has also been banned if the entire dead body of cattle is not examined and supplied for human use.
This removal of harmful materials from animal’s feed will also guard against unintended communication of the element that is considered a reason of BSE and can happen because of the cross-toxicity of animal feed .This added measure of removing harmful materials from all animals feeds will also avoid any fortuitous feeding of such harmful agents to cattle.
Under the new requirements of the final rule, renderers that process cattle not inspected and passed for human consumption must make available for FDA inspection their written protocols for determining the age of cattle and demonstrating that the brain and spinal cords of cattle have been effectively removed.
The final rule will be effective from today and will last 12 months it will also allow the livestock, meat and feed industries to adjust their practices according to the new regulation. Under the new requirements of the final rule, renderers that precede cattle without inspection and shift for human use must be accessible for FDA check with their written set of rules to know the age of cattle and signifying that the brain and spinal cords of cattle have been successfully detached
FDA legalizes feed and drugs. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and FDA together propagate and implement the regulations that make sure the omission of some risk materials from the human food supply.

As weird as it may appear, does the 30 month period really hold true? What if a cow gets BSE genetically..what are the issues then?

Good one. This is the horror full disease and we can avoid only by that way - excluding cattle materials.

Anything that can be done in the course of battling mad cow disease would be a bonus. It is a crippling disease and can be a real affliction to the cows themselves but also a major threat to the livelihoods of the farmers.

Well indeed it is good step fom FDA to reduced the risk of mad cod disase and we would surly see positive results in next 12 months. They also taken a good step by omission of some risk materials from the human food supply.
