It has been found by the researchers of The Netherlands that the odds of regular ear infection are double in babies and children who use pacifiers or dummies if compare to those who don’t use.
The study can be found in the advanced online issue of the Family Practice journal and it’s a work of Dr Maroeska Rovers and colleagues from the Julius Center for Health Science and Primary Care, University Medical Center Utrecht.
Although, recent researchers has reported relation in use of a pacifier or dummy and high risk of AOM, middle ear infection but methodological limitations prove it not reliable and that was the reason Rovers and colleagues conducted that study .
They followed, under a five year dynamic population study, 495 children between the age group of 1 to 4 years living in Utrecht. A questionnaire about the use of dummies or pacifiers was filled by the children’s parents and GPs diagnosed AOM ear infection by using International Classification of Primary Care coding system.
The doctor suggested that the use of Pacifier was an apparent risk factor for regular AOM.
The study recommended that doctors must tell parents of the children who suffer regular AOM about the odds of its appearing often in them if the children use dummy or pacifier.
