LONDON – The risk of developing a possibly fatal blood clot is more than double among menopausal women who receive hormone-replacement therapy pills, French researchers notified on Friday.
The risk was particularly higher in the first year of treatment as suggested by the review of 17 studies. The reviews were reported in the British Medical Journal. One of the common causes of heart attacks and strokes are the blood clots in the arteries while vein clots may kill if move through the body of the lungs.
According to the meta- analysis the use oral estrogen increases blood clots risk by two to three- folds, Stated Pierre-Yves Scarabin and Marianne Canonico of the Paul Brousse Hospital, France.
Hot flashes that are one of serious menopause symptoms is relieved by Hormone-replacement therapy that was quite accepted until 2002 but after some time a study recommended that this therapy increased the risk of strokes besides breast and ovarian cancer.
Millions of women of women abandon the use of these pills after these findings and it hit upon the shares of hormone therapies makers like Wyeth.
Some other experts don’t acknowledge that study and earlier this week they issued a statement which was telling about their review of many studies that found HRT safe for early menopause and without increasing risk of heart disease among women that aged 50 to 59.
Many earlier trials have also associated the pills to blood clots but this French review was the first meta-analysis that observes what other studies have described to know how intense the raised risk is.
The analysis of nine randomized controlled trials and eight observational studies showed that when hormone-replacement therapy offered as a patch demonstrated no notable raised risk not like the pills. According to researchers more research is needed to confirm these findings.
