A study says that daily use of chamomile tea may prove helpful to avoid the complications of type2 diabetes including nerve, vision and kidney damage.

The researchers form UK and Japan gave a chamomile extract to diabetic rats and they found that the extract seemed to reduce blood sugar levels and hampered the activity of an enzyme that was linked with diabetic complications.

But Charity Diabetes UK warned the patients against acting on the findings until the results of further study.

The study has been published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry and it shows hope for a new anti-diabetes drug.

Type2 diabetes is linked to obesity and its cases are on the increase all around the developed world.

Chamomile or manzanilla has been used as a medicine to treat a lot of medical problems such as colds, menstrual cramps and stress.

Atsushi Kato, from University of Toyama, and his team gave chamomile extract to diabetic rats for 21 days and compared the results with another group of rats who were given a normal diet.

The researchers found that the blood glucose levels of the rats, which were given extract, were significantly lower. The results also indicated a slower activity of the enzyme known as aldose reductase in those rats that were given extract. This enzyme converts glucose into a sugar alcohol known as sorbitol.
