U.S. researchers find that Beta-alanine, which is a widely used dietary supplement for athletes and body builders, seems to improve muscle endurance in the seniors.
Jeffery Stout, who authored the study, says: “our findings could prove helpful to prevent falls maintain health and independent living in elderly men and women.”
Beta-alanine is an amino acid and it helps to produce carnosine that plays a vital role in normal muscle function during intense workouts. According to researchers, BA causes higher carnosine levels in muscles.
In this study, the researchers determined the fitness levels of 26 elderly men and women who were given BA supplements or placebo pills for 90 days.
The researchers noted that there was a 67 percent improvement in the fitness levels of those who were given BA, while in the placebo group they found a 21.5 percent improvement in the fitness levels.
The study author says: “Our data show that 90 days of BA supplementation boosted physical working capacity in elderly men and women. A decrease in functional capacity to perform daily living tasks is related to an increase in mortality, mainly because of increased risk of falls.”
The study will be published online in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, this month.
