February issue of the “Acta Paediatrica” highlights a review based on an intrinsic relationship between the psychological problems of young women, behavioral problems of boys and the key role factor of an active father figure.
This review is based on the research study findings of Swedish researchers who derived a conclusion that a constant positive personal touch with boys and young women will help in reducing the growth of criminal emotions and behavior. This constant positive contact of an active father figure will also help in enhancing the related cognitive skills like intelligence, logical reasoning, and language developments among the children. It is specifically applicable to the lower-income group of families.
Researchers found that the children who are living with both the active father and mother will have far less chances of having behavioral problems compared to the children who are living with mother only. It is therefore more pertinent, according to the researchers, to enhance the level of involvement of an active father figure in the normal life patterns of the boys and young women in a family. Healthcare professionals and the law making authorities should also lay much emphasis on this aspect.
A complete review covering for 20 long years established that the children remain at more advantageous position if they were grown up within a family which has a key role played by an active father figure.
Such types of children were found to be less probable to fall in to habits like smoking. They have less chances of getting in to the hands of police and more chances of obtaining higher educational credits. Such children would normally have good friends from both the sexes.
Women who have been brought up under the key role of an active father figure will derive long-term benefits and would normally have long lasting, healthy, and happy relationship with their partners. Such women are more likely to have “greater sense of mental and physical well-being at the age of 33 if they had a good relationship with their father at 16″, according to the researchers.
Researchers were however, not in a position to identify the exact type of relationship with minute details with an active father figure which will help in developing a perfect model for others to follow. The active role could be anything including the talking, sharing activities, or participating in the children’s daily life with an active role.
Researchers are also of the view that further insight studies are required in order to understand the difference of outcomes in cases where the child is living with the biological father and with some other father figure.
For the time being, till further researches come with more facts, the intuitive assumption holds good that biological fathers or the active father figures both are playing the same effective role in solving the problems in case of children who are “socially and economically disadvantaged”, say the scientists.
It was also revealed in many research studies that the children who are living with both active father and mother figures do not have increased problems compared to the ones who are living with only mothers. It possibly explains the fact that mother is more helped by the presence of an active father figure to become better parents.
Therefore according to the researchers, families must recognize this important aspects and active father figures must take an active interest in the life of their children starting from an early age itself.
The lawmaking and public policy making authorities should also consider this fact with much seriousness and must design the structure of work and other schedules in such a way that the active father figures can contribute more effectively towards the betterment of their own families and help their own children’s upbringing in right way.
Governments and employers also have an important role to play in ensuring that men can spend quality time with their offspring, stress the authors.
