ovarian-cancer.gifA new study says that the development of ovarian cancer can be hampered by blocking oncogene MYC produced proteins. Oncogene (a gene) is known to boost risk of cancer.

MYC has been found over active in more than 60% of human ovarian growth and this hyper activity of the MYC makes ovarian cells to generate more and more c-Myc, which is a protein that regulates the involvement of other genes in cell development and it leads to the production of cancer cells.

In the study, the researchers from the University of California, used RNA inference and hampered the growth of human ovarian cancer cells with higher MYC. After that the researchers halted N-Myc and L-Myc proteins by using interfering RNA and they hampered the development of those MYC tumors that were non-amplified.

kidney-damage.gifFDA has required black label warning on two colon cleansing drugs used for the colonoscopy. These prescription drugs may cause renal impairment, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Thursday.

A black-box warning is know required on the orally administered sodium phosphate products Visicol and OsmoPrep, informing patients about the possible risk of acute phosphate nephropathy, a type of acute kidney injury.

“Twenty distinctive cases of renal injury coupled with the use of OsmoPrep have been reported to FDA,” Dr. Joyce Korvick, deputy director of FDA said. “Among these cases, three were biopsy-proven cases of acute phosphate nephropathy. The initiation of kidney dysfunction in these cases varied, occurring within the several hours of use of these products and in some cases up to 21 days after the use of the drug.”

In routine, patients of constipation take oral sodium phosphate products. These drugs can either be prescribed or OTC (over the counter), to clean the large intestines before a colonoscopy or used as a laxative.

flu-shots.gifA new study finds that getting annual flu shots can decrease the risk for disease, hospital visits and school interruptions in college students.

In this study, the researchers studied student of Minnesota University and VA Medical Center campuses during 2002-06 flu seasons.

The background information in 12,975 students study, the researchers found that every year 9% to 20% students got the infection. Among them 30.2% had got a flu shot. The researchers found that the students who had got flu shot had a considerably lower risk of getting illness than those who didn’t get flu shot.

“Vaccination proved quite effective in reducing other flu-related problems like health-care visits, use of antibiotic, poor performance in school and other school interruptions like missing class, missing work or day spent on the bed during the flu season ,” Dr. Kristin L. Nichol’ who led the study, says.
